I explore concepts of navigation and dislocation using a variety of mediums, including drawing, video, installation, and site-specific works. The use abstraction, mapping, and sampling as well as the use of text, help me investigate the intricate nature of my experience as part of the Puerto Rican diaspora and the fragmented and layered ways in which we perceive the world around (and inside) us. Abstraction in my practice serves as a language and method through which I process concepts and sentiments that I find otherwise hard to express. I often work with found maps and with mapping as a conceptual strategy to examine connections, territories, and the concept of distance while considering alternative geographies. The incorporation of found and sampled text serves to explore shifts in perception, memory, and code-switching. Through my work, I aim to offer viewers multi-layered experiences that fluctuate from the retinal to the conceptual and serve as a space for contemplation.
